Plymouth Brethren Values, Family Life and Community Engagement

Share

Plymouth Brethren values are strongly centred on humility, family and mutual responsibility. Guided by biblical teaching, members are encouraged to live modestly, act with integrity and place importance on strong family relationships.

These principles shape daily life within the Plymouth Brethren community across the world including in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Europe and the USA.

Family life is a cornerstone of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church. Households place emphasis on cooperation and shared decision-making, both at home and in business. Young people typically live at home until marriage, supporting close family bonds and intergenerational connection. These relationships extend to wider family networks, reinforcing a sense of belonging and care.

The Plymouth Brethren beliefs also emphasise compassion and service. From an early age, children are encouraged to care for others and contribute to society in a positive way. Members participate in charitable and voluntary activities, most notably through the Rapid Relief Team (RRT). Operating internationally, the Rapid Relief Team provides practical support during emergencies and community events, offering catering and assistance to first responders and those in need.

The Plymouth Brethren community engages openly with the broader public. Members shop locally, volunteer, run businesses and employ people from diverse backgrounds. The idea of separation within the Plymouth Brethren, which is sometimes incorrectly referred to as the Exclusive Brethren movement, relates primarily to shared religious practices, not social exclusion. Respect for others remains a core tenet of the faith.

The Church is not a cult. We are part of a mainstream Christian denomination guided by clearly defined Plymouth Brethren beliefs and values. The Brethren Church’s Tax obligations are met in full, and similarly we expect our parishioners to comply with local laws

Members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church are united by shared values rather than separated from the communities around us.
