Understanding the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church

Share

The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church forms part of a long-standing Christian tradition with roots in 19th century England.

Emerging in the city of Plymouth, the movement was shaped by John Nelson Darby, whose teaching emphasised the authority of the Bible and the importance of living a life consistent with Christian faith.

Over time, this developed into a movement which reflected a desire for close fellowship and shared beliefs.

These days, the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church is a global Christian community with more than 55,000 members across Australia, New Zealand, Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Caribbean and Argentina.

While the Church is international in scope, members share strong connections across oceans and borders because of their shared faith and fellowship.

From time to time, incorrect terms such as “Brethren Cult” have been used to describe our Church.

The Church is not a cult. We are part of a mainstream Christian denomination guided by clearly defined Plymouth Brethren beliefs and values.

These include faith in the Bible as the inspired Word of God, personal moral responsibility, humility, family commitment and respect for others.

The Plymouth Brethren faith encourages engagement with the wider world. Members live in ordinary homes, work in a wide range of industries and contribute to the economy.

The Brethren Church’s Tax obligations are met in full, and similarly we expect our parishioners to comply with local laws and regulations in the countries where they live. Far from being Exclusive Brethren, many Brethren-owned businesses employ people from both within and outside the Brethren community.

The Church has adapted to modern society in practical ways. Technology is used extensively for education, business and communication, supporting both economic participation and community connection. We also have deep respect for technological and scientific advancements which contribute to the improvement of societies, and this extends to those who are pioneering advancements.

This balanced approach reflects the Church’s belief in using modern tools responsibly while remaining grounded in faith.

While the Plymouth Brethren rules, beliefs and practices may differ from other Christian denominations, they are based on shared convictions rather than isolation.

Members seek to live peacefully alongside people of all faiths and none, valuing respectful relationships within the broader community.
